Showcasing the simple life

The ethos behind Farmcraft is to give guests a taste of life on a working sheep farm, in a breathtakingly-beautiful West Country setting between Bath and Bradford-on-Avon. After a childhood immersed in farm life — from shepherding to nurturing orphan lambs — Becky is keen to share her farming knowhow, with an emphasis on fun.

Maintaining tradition

Becky’s father Steve, who owns Church Farm, has farmed sheep in Winsley for 30 years, following in the footsteps of his father Bertie Bowles and generations before. There are 180 breeding ewes on the farm, seven rams, a handful of lambs from last year and five famous sheep herders. We farm a mixture of breeds from Welsh Lleyns to Texels, each distinct in their own way. Spring lambing starts at the end of March for up to six weeks, when it’s all hands on deck (and early starts) for the busiest time of year.

Meet the Team

  • Becky Mora Bowles

    Farmcraft Founder

My earliest sheep-herding memory moving sheep from one field to another. My role was standing in a gateway with wide arms and a wide stance to stop sheep going past me!

A typical day on Church Farm involves a lot of variety. Sometimes it is an office day when helping to run the family holiday cottages business. Other days there’s sheep work to do. More recently it is running about after my toddler and fitting in some office and farm work when I can!

The thing that surprises people most about sheep is everything! People sign up to my farm sessions with a very open-mind. I often hear people walk away from an activity saying ‘I want to be a sheep farmer’

  • Harriet Tate

    Farmcraft assistant

Life as a PE taught me that communication is KEY! This is also pretty essential in a lot of the activities we run, particularly sheep herding!

The Farm Olympics event I'd back myself for a gold medal in is welly wanging! The best event ever to be created! They go all over the place

The best thing about being out on a farm is watching the landscape and animals change with the seasons
